Telecommunications and the digital economy

Digitisation and the development of the telecommunications industry are revolutionising the shape of politics, economics and society across Europe and the world. The European Commission has produced an extensive programme of regulatory and economic responses to the opportunities and challenges presented by the digital economy. This includes fostering the development of the Digital Single Market, supporting the competitiveness of traditional and new industries in the digital environment, encouraging digital awareness and acquisition of new skills among the workforce and citizens in Europe.

In some cases, existing regulation needs to be adapted to the ensure it remains effective in a fast-changing environment, in other cases new tools and support mechanisms need to be developed to ensure everyone in Europe is well placed to reap the benefits of the digital revolution.

Our digital technology team assists clients by assessing the suitability of current regulatory instruments, determining the need for change and helping to design new, flexible tools that withstand the fast pace of change in technology, the emergence of new business models, and the behavioural responses of consumers and citizens. Our work in this practice spans the full spectrum from legal and regulatory evaluations, to economic impact assessments, to analysis of the social and environmental implications of digital technology.

In addition our in-house expertise VVA is also an active member of the Big Data Value Association (BDVA) which works to foster the use of big data analytics in in public policy.
